Ozone for Hunting Gear The Ozone for Hunting Gear Story The following is one of my most memorable testimonials. This customer tried to tell me all the way back in 2011 to start a special division of our company that focuses on using ozone to deodorize hunting gear. At the time I didn't take it too seriously. I'm not a hunter and I didn't think there would be a big market for it. Boy, was I wrong. Fast forward to today and there is a HUGE market of ozone products for hunters. I should have listened to Ken's suggestion below... Here’s the scoop: I took the MaxBlaster to Illinois and the guys up there agreed to let me set it up in their tack room where they kept their hunting gear between hunts. I know you are not a deer hunter but believe me when I tell you that they can smell like a blood hound and they travel into the wind whenever possible. There is no possible way to fool their sense of smell 100% or even 90% and the older the deer the smarter they are (we are hunting the old, mature bucks with the big antlers). The goal is to reduce your scent footprint as much as possible through a variety of methods and still try to set up down wind of where you think they might travel. We also hunt 20 to 30’ off the ground to help disburse our scent. There are products available to remove human and other odor from skin and clothes that work fairly well but do require some time and effort that makes it difficult to do before every hunt (i.e. take a shower or wash clothes). I usually carry 3 sets of clothes for a one week hunt and try to keep my spares in a special scent proof bag ($29.95). Problem is that some of the gear can’t be effectively cleaned. Backpacks, bows & arrows, binocular straps, hats, boots, gloves, calls, tree stands, etc. pick up odors over time from riding around in the back of the truck or being worn against the body. All of these can easily be washed between hunts by your unit. This prospect alone had everybody excited to try it. We set up in the tack room by building a rack out of 2x4s and saw horses to supplement the hooks already on the walls. We hung the MaxBlaster from a ceiling hook located near the window which we cracked an inch or so. The humidity was pretty low the first few days we were there so I felt pretty good about that. We spread our gear out on the rack and hooks and washed it for about 2 ½ hours. This became the SOP after each hunt. While it is hard to prove a negative, all indications are that the ozone worked to reduce our scent footprint by a very significant margin. I was forced to hunt from the ground one evening and had deer downwind of me as close as 25’. This is absolutely unheard of. These deer could see me and knew I didn’t belong but never spooked and ran off. The other guys had similar experiences and while we did get busted a couple of times, the general opinion was that the ozone wash was extremely effective in reducing our scent footprint. I wore the same clothes for 4 days until it rained and soaked them making them impossible to wear and difficult to ozone. The average hunting experience of the guys involved is around 35 years. None of us are rookies and none of us are ready to swear that ozone washing is the answer. We will continue to experiment and experience until we have a definitive answer. The Illinois guys made me leave my unit with them and the PA guys will be getting their own unit, as will my hunting buddy since he lives too far from me to use mine. I recommended they use the MaxBlaster and gave them your website. I will need another unit since mine is still in Ill. I strongly suggest you work a deal with the Illinois guys to feature your unit on one of their TV episodes because I believe, if the evidence stays strong, that they will work a deal with someone and that it will result in a significant number of sales. The most common application for ozone machines in vehicles is smoke odor removal. Other highly successful applications include water damage (mold) remediation, pet odor removal, food odor removal, cannabis odor removal, dead rodent odor removal, and toxin/virus/bacteria remediation. How do you prepare the vehicle? The number one rule for treating vehicles is to make sure that the vehicle is completely dry prior to running the ozone machine. No damp/wet upholstery . You also want to make sure that the vehicle is completely empty of all contents. Remove all items from the center console, visors, glove box, rear seat pouches, trunk area, and leave everything open and exposed to the ozone gas. For extra protection against prolonged airing out times, cover up the seatbelts as nylon material is relatively susceptible to ozone gas. Where do you place the machine? The simple way is to place the ozone machine inside the car and leave the windows down about half an inch. The professional way is to place the machine outside the vehicle and funnel the ozone in through a hose. The cleaner the air that the ozone machine brea thes, the higher efficiency results you can expect over time. What is the purpose of the hose? The hose allows the ozone machine to remain outside the vehicle where it can breathe cleaner, fresher oxygen (O2) in order to convert into ozone (O3). It helps minimize service to the ozone machine over the long term. But you have to do it right - the only time you should use the hose is if you can get the ozone machine as close to the window as possible. Don't stretch the hose more than about 2' to avoid inefficiency. How long do you run the machine? To permanently kill odors with ozone (and not just mask the odors) you must flood the treatment area with a very high concentration of ozone gas for at least 30 minutes. Should you leave the A/C on or off? We recommend keeping the vehicle a/c off during the first 75% of the ozone treatment. This will allow the ozone to build up to the highest concentration level within the cabin without diluting it by running the air conditioner. Once you have reached peak ozone concentration inside the vehicle, turning the a/c on for the remaining 25% of the treatment will pull high levels of ozone into the vents, and may help to further deodorize the a/c system. How do you air out the vehicle? Given the small treatment area size (compared to a house) it is very easy and fast to air out a vehicle after the ozone treatment. Simply open all the windows and doors, then maybe drive the vehicle around the block for a few minutes. Or you can leave the vehicle shut, and simply wait for the ozone to go away on it's own. A conservative estimate is to allow 2 hours for every 1 hour that you ran the ozone machine for the O3 gas to dissipate naturally. Allowing the ozone to naturally dissipate provides additional cleaning benefits. What to do after the ozone session? During the treatment, high concentrations of ozone gas has an unpleasant scent. But once the ozone has been aired out, the goal is to smell nothing (neutral air). No fragrances or odor masking. However, sometimes ozone will react with other materials inside the vehicle during the treatment and settle (invisibly) on the upholstery, floor, and dashboard. We recommend vacuuming and wiping everything down after the ozone session. The combination of high-intensity ozone followed by a thorough interior detailing provides the best results. Can I just use a cheap ozone machine? You can buy a cheap ozone machine on Amazon that might work for a couple of treatments. But the components are weak, fragile, and prone to short lifespan.
